Fab Lab Field Trips
Field trips to BNY Fab Lab Carnegie Science Center deliver dynamic, hands-on making experiences for school groups. Groups can choose between a project workshop or an engineering challenge.
To learn more about field trip opportunities in the Fab Lab, including a full list of our offerings, contact STEM Education Coordinator Fab Lab Cathy Coudriet at CoudrietC@CarnegieScienceCenter.org or 412.802.2135.
Project workshop
In this one-and-a-half-hour workshop, each student will design and create a project using the digital fabrication technologies available in Fab Lab (machines can include laser cutters, vinyl cutters, 3D printers, or the CNC mill). Fab Lab education facilitators will lead the group through digital design using 2D or 3D design software and then students will learn how the computer-controlled machine works while fabricating their unique projects.
Sample Projects Include: Laser Cut Gliders, Vinyl-Cut T-Shirts, and Soldered LED Flashlights.
Capacity: Up to 15 students, plus a minimum of one chaperone
Duration: 1 1/2hours
Cost: $270
Engineering challenge
During this one-and-a-half-hour engineering challenge, students will work in teams to design, prototype, and test their projects. Challenges are designed to use basic making materials as well as digital fabrication machines (such as the laser cutter, vinyl cutter, or 3D printer), so that teams are introduced to the software and hardware capabilities of the Fab Lab.
Sample Engineering Challenges include: Laser-cut bridges for Sphero Robots, Laser-cut earthquake-resistant structures, Friction flickers
Capacity: Up to 30 students, plus a minimum of two chaperones.
Duration: 1 1/2 hours
Cost: $450
