Chain Reaction Contraption Contest

Grades 9–12

Registration Deadline: Fri., Oct. 9
Preliminary Contest Judging: Tues., Dec. 8
Final Judging Round: Fri., Dec. 11
Registration Fee: $25.00 per school

High school students build a contraption that completes a specific task in 20 steps or more. Teams submit preliminary design drawings, project progress photos/videos, and reports to document their contraption's evolution, then present their contraptions for judging based on functionality, complexity, and creativity in achieving the task.

This year, the Chain Reaction Contraption Contest goes virtual with the task Hindsight is 20/20! To celebrate the 20th Chain Reaction Contraption Contest, students can choose to have their contraption complete any of the previous nineteen contest tasks, which can be found under Previous Contests.

All student teams will present their contraptions for preliminary judging via video on Tues., Dec. 8, after which eight teams will be selected to advance to the finals on Fri., Dec. 11.
