In early March, more than 1,200 students in grades 1-5 explored science, technology, engineering, and math in a whole new way with STEM Adventure, a field trip event organized by Carnegie Science Center’s Duquesne Light Co. Each year, Carnegie Science Center celebrates some of the Pittsburgh region’s most inspiring science and technology innovators with the Carnegie Science Awards. Learn more about this year’s winners. opens in a new window

Grants and Awards

  • A $1,000,000 grant from The Buhl Foundation will help fund renovations to the Buhl Planetarium.
  • The Pierce Family Foundation Inc. granted $1,000,000 for the Buhl Planetarium, a third of which will be put toward establishing a new Buhl Planetarium endowment.
  • Duquesne Light Company is continuing its support with $175,000 towards the Duquesne Light Co. Center for STEM Education and Career Development.
  • A $300,000 grant from the Allegheny Regional Asset Depot will support accessibility renovations to the main entrance.
  • Green Mountain Energy awarded $100,000 for sponsorship of The Rangos Giant Cinema, Science After Hours (adult programming), and Mummies of the World: The Exhibition.
  • Arconic Foundation donated $100,000 towards the Arconic Foundation School Trip Fund, which offers field trip funding for schools in Allegheny, Beaver, Butler, and Westmoreland Counties.
  • Pittsburgh Steelers Sports, Inc. donated $100,000 toward general operating.
  • A $143,800 grant from PPG Foundation will go toward the development of a Science of Hockey theater show.

Science Center in the News

  • The media often turns to the experts at the Science Center for information about the latest science news and trends, from advice for getting children interested in coding opens in a new window to insight on a possible satellite collision opens in a new window.
  • Earlier this year, three Pittsburgh police officers joined students from Manchester Academic Charter School on a field trip to Mummies of the World: The Exhibition. The visit (covered by Pittsburgh Post-Gazette opens in a new window) was part of an initiative to foster relationships between law enforcement and the communities they serve.
  • Following the reveal of the latest addition to the Miniature Railroad & Village® – the historic downtown Kaufmann Department Store – 90.5 WESA opens in a new window took a look into how the Science Center uses technology to build and enrich the 100-year-old display.
