FAQs for Summer Camps

We know that you expect a great experience when you send your children to the Science Center and thoughtful measures have been taken to ensure that we meet your expectations while still working to keep your child safe. Here are answers to questions you may have about how your Carnegie Science Center Summer Camp experience will change.

When can I register?

Registration is open via the website or by emailing CustomerService@CarnegieScienceCenter.org.

What if my camp is canceled?

In case of insufficient registration, Carnegie Science Center reserves the right to cancel any program two weeks before it begins. All registered participants will have the option of attending another camp or receiving a full refund. We are evaluating upcoming programming and will communicate by email if there are any changes to camps for which you are registered at least four weeks prior to your scheduled camp. For questions regarding a Summer Camp reservation, please email CustomerService@CarnegieScienceCenter.org.

What are you requiring of campers to be sure that everyone is safe?

  • Face coverings (mouth and nose) will be required for all campers and staff.
  • Temperature checks for camp staff and campers.
  • Social distancing of six feet will be required of all campers and visitors.
  • Handwashing and hand sanitizing stations are readily available; campers will receive proper hygiene encouragement.
  • Parent confirmation that the camper is not ill and has not come into contact with others who have experienced symptoms of COVID-19.
  • Learn about our enhanced cleaning protocols, capacity reductions, hygiene education, and more.

Why are you having camp while other organizations are canceling it?

We are meeting and exceeding the guidelines provided by the PA Department of Health with large classrooms, incorporating new spaces, instituting strict safety procedures, and continuous education on the importance of personal hygiene. We also surveyed our camp registrants and members to see other measures we could take to safely open in-person camp sessions with enough space to allow proper social distancing.

How many children are in each camp?

The capacity of the camps that are currently scheduled to take place this season has been greatly reduced to ensure safe social distancing, therefore there are a limited number of spaces available in them. Each room and camp capacity allow at least six feet between campers or 1/3 normal capacity.

What is your payment policy?

Online registration is the most effective way to secure your place in camp. Online registration requires payment in full by credit card. Registration can also be done via email. We accept Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express. Email CustomerService@CarnegieScienceCenter.org to register.

Who are the camp instructors?

Carnegie Science Center camp instructors are professional teachers and college seniors majoring in science or education, assisted by college students with documented experience working with children. Camps are designed by camp instructors and full-time Carnegie Science Center professionals to be age-appropriate, stimulating, and exciting. All summer camp staff members–instructors and assistants—have passed thorough background checks.

What does the camp registration fee include?

Camp registration fees include all scheduled activities, instruction, materials, plenty of time to explore the Science Center, and a summer camp T-shirt. Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh members enjoy discounted fees.

Are scholarships available?

A limited number of need-based scholarships are available. Email CustomerService@CarnegieScienceCenter.org for more information.
