FAQs for Holiday Camps

We know that you expect a great experience when you send your children to the Science Center and thoughtful measures have been taken to ensure that we meet your expectations while still working to keep your child safe. Here are answers to questions you may have about Holiday Camps.

When can I register?

Registration is open via the website or by calling 412.237.3400. Registration requires payment in full by credit card. We accept Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express. Please note the last day to register for a Holiday Camp is Wed., Dec. 22.

What is your camp cancelation policy?

Carnegie Science Center reserves the right to cancel any program due to insufficient registration, inclement weather, or other unforeseen circumstances. All registered participants will have the option of attending another camp (pending availability) or receiving a full refund. We will communicate by email if there are any changes to camps for which you are registered.

What are you requiring of campers to be sure that everyone is safe?

  • Face coverings (mouth and nose) will be required for all campers and staff.
  • Social distancing of three feet will be required of all campers and visitors, including in the classroom.
  • Handwashing and hand sanitizing stations are readily available; campers will receive proper hygiene encouragement.
  • Parent confirmation that the camper is not ill and has not come into contact with others who have experienced symptoms of COVID-19.
  • Learn about our enhanced cleaning protocols, capacity reductions, hygiene education, and more.

Who are the camp instructors?

Carnegie Science Center camp instructors are professional teachers and college seniors majoring in science or education, assisted by college students with documented experience working with children. Camps are designed by camp instructors and full-time Carnegie Science Center professionals to be age-appropriate, stimulating, and exciting. All holiday camp staff members–instructors and assistants—have passed thorough background checks.

What is the procedure for check-in and check-out?

All children must be signed in and out by an adult. Upon arrival to Carnegie Science Center, please pull a ticket and park. You do not have to pay for parking if you are in the lot for less than 45 minutes. Enter the building through our Ground Floor Group Services entrance, and turn left at the RiverView Café. Please note, masks are required at check-in and check-out for adults and children over age 2. At camp check-in, a Carnegie Science Center staff member will be in the lobby to greet you. Check-in will be held at the entrance of the FedEx STEM Learning Labs and will be begin approximately 30 minutes before 9 am. Please bring your paperwork. At camp check-out, enter through the Ground Floor Group Services entrance and walk straight back to the FedEx STEM Learning Lab. Please be prepared to show a valid ID before picking up a camper.

Can I pick up my child early from Holiday Camp?

Yes, early pickups are possible prior to 3:30 pm. Between 3:30–4 pm camp staff and campers are wrapping up their day and preparing for check out. If possible, please let your child’s teacher know in the morning that you need to pick them up early. Call the Camps & Classes cell phone at 412.855.4638 when you are on-site at Carnegie Science Center to let us know who you are picking up and what camp they are in. You can wait for your child at Group Services (the same place you entered check-in and check-out from). Please be aware that it may take 10 to 15 minutes for your child to wrap up their activities before a staff member brings them to meet you.

Can I pick up or drop off my child without entering the building?

No. An adult’s signature is required for every child attending Holiday Camp at both check-in and check-out.

What should my child wear to camp?

Wear comfortable clothing that you are okay to get messy in. Sometimes, experiments can get a little messy! Closed-toed shoes are also recommended. Feel free to also bring a long-sleeved jacket or sweatshirt. As a reminder, all holiday campers and staff must wear a face mask over their nose and mouth.

What should my camper take with them to camp?

All campers should bring a bagged lunch and a water bottle. Bookbags, toys, electronics, and anything of value should be left at home. Carnegie Science Center is not responsible for lost or damaged items.
