Science is a systematic enterprise that builds and organizes knowledge in the form of testable explanations and predictions about the universe.
The main branches of science are also referred to as "sciences", "scientific fields", or "scientific disciplines".
There was a time when science could be broken down into neat-and-tidy disciplines – straightforward things like biology, chemistry, physics, and astronomy. But as science advances, these fields are becoming increasingly specialized and interdisciplinary, leading to entirely new avenues of inquiry.
Science is from the Latin scientia, meaning "knowledge".
Technology is the branch of knowledge that deals with the creation and use of technical means and their interrelation with life, society, and the environment, drawing upon such subjects as industrial arts, engineering, applied science, and pure science.
Engineering is the application of science and math to design or manufacture something that benefits society. This can include structures, machines, processes, and systems. For example, engineers help build bridges, buildings, computers, appliances, power plants, and transportation systems.
Mathematics is the abstract study of topics including quantity, structure, space, change, as well as other properties.
Mathematicians seek out patterns and to come up with new conjectures. Mathematicians resolve the truth of conjectures by mathematical proof. When mathematical these are good models of real phenomena, then mathematical reasoning can provide insight or predictions about nature.
Through the use of abstraction and logical reasoning, mathematics developed from counting, calculation, measurement, and the systematic study of the shapes and motions of physical objects.
Mathematics is an essential tool in fields such as natural science, engineering, medicine, and the social sciences.
Applied mathematics, the branch of mathematics concerned with application of mathematical knowledge to other fields, inspires and makes use of new mathematical discoveries, and has led to the development of entirely new mathematical disciplines, such as statistics and game theory.
