The Carnegie STEM Excellence Pathway® is an award-winning tool built on the belief that school systems, individual schools, and departments can improve their STEM education practices through a positive, collaborative approach. The Pathway is a free online strategic planning tool that’s designed to help the widest possible range of school districts and schools adopt best practices in STEM education.
When districts and schools become Pathway Partners, they use the Pathway’s framework to determine what successful improvement of STEM education will look like for their institutions. After forming a diverse team of teachers, administrators, and support staff to guide the Pathway process, the Partners take a self-evaluation of their status in the following areas: teacher qualifications, curriculum, instructional practices, assessment and demonstration of skills, family engagement, and real-world connections. After the self-evaluation, the Partners select up to three priority areas and then formulate a realistic action plan in those areas.
Through this long-term, goal-oriented approach, districts and schools can progress to higher levels of STEM education excellence. Learn more about the Pathway experience through testimonials about how the tool is making an impact on schools across the country.
The Pathway is available through STEMisphere® , created by Carnegie Science Center as a community service to provide a portal to educational STEM resources for students in pre-K through 12th grade across the region. We offer workshops and other professional development opportunities to help schools and districts begin and implement STEM education improvement practices.

One of our Carnegie STEM Excellence Pathway Providers in Northeast Missouri posted this video, which is an excellent example of a Pathway Provider workshop. Brian Crouse, Vice President of Education for Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Industry said, “Certainly, we opened many minds to the possibilities for taking a holistic, integrated approach to STEM education.”
