"Scratching the Surface of Surface Engineering"

Scratching the Surface of Surface Engineering

Ever since the industrial revolution, there has been non-stop innovation in areas of aerospace, automotive, and building construction. The ways we fly, drive, build, and power our lives all have one thing in common: a surface.

In some cases, surfaces are coated to protect a product against harsh environments like automotive engines or road salt. In other cases, the surface is the star of the show, such as a beautiful cell phone case or a brand-new high-rise building.

Join Senior Staff Scientist Dr. Kelly Weiler from Arconic Technology Center as she discusses how customer needs drive research and development in surface technologies. During this presentation, Weiler will also talk about the progress in creating new materials that are lighter, faster, and stronger.

Weiler is a Senior Staff Scientist in the Material Interface and Surface Engineering group at the Arconic Technology Center where she develops products with differentiated surface technologies. Weiler also leads the ATC Arconic Foundation team and is responsible for our community investment and volunteerism portfolio. Prior to joining the company, Weiler worked as a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Konstanz in Germany and taught General Chemistry at the University of Washington and at North Seattle Community College.

Kelly earned her B.S. degree in Chemistry from the University of Pittsburgh and her Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Washington. She has contributed to ten peer reviewed publications and one patent.
